For the remainder of this year, 2018, the Norwich City Historian blog site will focus on the 100th anniversary of World War One and the role of men and women from Norwich in the conflict. An important event coming up is June 23rd - NORWICH DIGITIZATION DAY. Staff from the Connecticut State Library led by Christine Pittsley will be at the Otis Library from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm to digitize photographs and other documentary material from World War One.  There will also be a display in June of World One memorabilia at the Otis Library.
 
Fellow historian Dave Oat has kindly permitted me to post his article on William Durr, a young man from Norwichtown who died in action during the war. Although his body was never recovered, his name is inscribed in the chapel of the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France. In Norwich, the youth group at the First Congregational Church planted a memorial tree in his honor near Meetinghouse Rocks in 1919. The tree died in 2017, and was removed, but a granite memorial remains.
