Mission Statement

To maintain and preserve the city’s assets and infrastructure – including roads, bridges, parks, buildings, cemeteries, solid waste facilities, and automotive equipment – as well as protect the property of all Norwich citizens and businesses.

Our vision is to be the model public works department in Southeastern Connecticut – one that other public works departments utilize as a benchmark. The department values ingenuity, dedication, skill, and integrity.

Description of Services

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the care and maintenance of the following:

  • 161+ miles of streets
  • City drainage systems, including more than 3,200 storm drains
  • 15 formal parks, parklets, and/or cemeteries (more than 155 acres)
  • Physical plant and custodial operations for all city-owned buildings and parking garages (more than 440,000 square feet)
  • 10 parking lots
  • 5+ miles of sidewalks
  • 310+ pieces of automotive and/or maintenance equipment
  • 25,000+ engineering plans
  • Rogers Road Transfer Station
  • Closed landfills at Rogers Road and Corning Road
