The City of Norwich Engineering Department completed the 2018 MS4 annual report as required by Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) general permit for discharge of stormwater from Municipal Separate Storm Sewage Systems.
The Engineering Department has hired CLA Engineers of Norwich to conduct wet weather sampling and testing of outfalls that discharge to impaired waters. The purpose of these tests is to ultimately locate the source or sources of pollutants. The pollutants of concern in the Thames River are phosphorus, nitrogen and bacteria. In the Shetucket River it is bacteria. In the Yantic River it is phosphorus and nitrogen.
The Engineering Department is asking Norwich residents to help address these problems by reducing the amount of fertilizer used on grass (a major cause of nitrogen and phosphorus) and by using proper ways to dispose of pet waste (a source of bacteria).
The Engineering Department is encouraging residents to report illicit discharges at (860) 823-3798.
